Hōshōryū was crowned the new Yokozuna in light of his latest win at the 2025 January Basho. Some were skeptical of his promotion given 3 losses, but his playoff performance to cinch the win was enough to convince the JSA.
A huge part of his success was due to his ability to counter pusher-thrusters by clearing their arms to gain a favorable position.
