Midorifuji is a fan favorite rikishi because of his small size and exciting array of kimarite. Being a smaller rikishi, he has to find more creative ways than brute force in order to win.
Like any combat sport, Midorifuji finds that obtaining a dominant angle will lead him to victory. For those who don’t know, a dominant angle is one in which you can attack and your opponent cannot reliably counter. The most common and easy to visualize is if you are facing your opponent’s side, looking directly in their ear. They are facing 90 degrees away from you, while you can unload on them without a chance of counter attack. This concept is applicable in both grappling and striking, and as you can see, sumo.
If you like sumo, I’ve written one article on another small man, Enho, and plan to have the occasional sumo article in the future. Let me know how you like the sumo content and what else you would like!
